Let Them Eat Cake!

I was looking through old pictures today while I cleaned up my hard drive, and found a great picture of one of my son's old birthday cakes. My wife is one of those great moms that, every year, asks her kids what kind of birthday cake they want, and every year they come up with some wild, out-of-the-blue request, and she figures out how to make it in cake form.

A year or so ago, my son and I were playing quite a bit of WizKids' Mechwarrior CMG. Where most of "dad's games" were just too complex to hold his 8-year old interest, Mechwarrior was just right. (As a side note: It was playing mechwarrior that acutally got me back into minitures gaming, and caused us to spend a weekend on the father/son project of building a terrain table. Anyway, I digress... )

As his birthday approached, my wife asked him what kind of cake he wanted. He responded (without hesitation) "A Timberwolf!" That night I found my wife googling for "dog cakes," and I had to explain to her that he was talking about a different kind of timberwolf. I dug through some old books and finnaly came up with a good picture of what a Timberwolf mech looks like. After looking at me for a long minute with eyes that said "I can't believe I married such a dork," she went off to work on it. I think the results speak for themselves:

Not bad for a giant robot made out of cake. I hope he realizes how cool his mom is.
