Kustom Khador

I mentioned last time that I was going to paint up a Khador battle box, just to get a change of pace from working on my Cygnar and Cryx. I didn't want to go with the standard all-red scheme as I've always found it a little overpowering. I did want to keep the some red components, because I like to stay aligned with the world fluff, and I think it does a good job of evoking the the sense of "communist threat" that is Khador.

I've always really liked Ali McVey's 5th Border Legion colors, but I wanted something with a bit more red. I also didn't want to do the "green iron" base color, as my Cryx army is a deep green, and I wanted my Khador to stand out as different. In the end, I settled on a battleship grey scheme with a lot of red accents. You can see the results below:

I guess I like it, but it kind of looks like a football uniform. In hind sight, I can see how the greenish iron would have been a little more complimentary with the red, but this still works. I went for some custom lettering along the shoulders, which looks great at table-top distance but a little sloppy close up. In fact, now that I have starting taking an interest in actually playing the game rather than just painting, my painting has been speeding up at the expense of quality. The models still look great at about three feet (especially compared to the bare metal most people field), but they are no where near as nice as some of my best efforts, like this troll.

My camera had a heck of a time getting a good picture of this... Something about the paint scheme drove its internal color compensation crazy, and it wanted to turn the red into an ugly hot pink. I had to do some color correction in Photoshop, and now the reds ended up looking a little more orange compared to the actual model, but you get the gist of it.

116 days until PAX.
